Sotera Wireless, Inc. is a San Diego, California based health technology company dedicated to detecting early signs of patient deterioration in any acute care setting. The team includes leaders in patient monitoring technology as well as and clinical leaders that understand the challenges of introducing technology and practice change into hospitals.
When the patient’s life can be on the line, the interaction with the software has to be lightening-fast and absolutely hassle-free. By employing our design methodology and experience in healthcare software, we managed to create a streamlined obstacle-free experience for doctors and nurses.
Our primary goal was always an optimal user experience. The resulting product is clean, simple and easy to use." – Phillip Trewhella Vice President, Systems Software Development and Interoperability at Sotera Wireless, Inc.

All of the vital signs measurements along with the associated waveforms are streamed continuously over the hospital’s wireless network infrastructure. The full fidelity data is captured on a server and is also relayed to remote viewing stations deployed throughout the facility. From a remote viewer, a clinician can keep an eye on all of the patients on their unit, receive alarms and view historical trend data.
We utilized an agile product development process and met with the team on a daily basis. This allowed the team to respond quickly to sometimes rapidly changing requirements and priorities. The work was excellent. The resulting software is very stable and free from defects."
The Wearable Challenge
A crucial part of the system is the custom device, that’s worn on the patient’s hand to constantly monitor and report vital signs. It’s a 4 ounce patient worn ICU-grade continuous vital signs monitor. It measures all of the core vital signs – oxygen saturation, pulse rate, respiratory rate, heart rate, skin temperature and non-invasive blood pressure. We had to integrate the custom wearable with iOS and Android devices to ensure unobtrusive but highly timely alarms to doctors and nurses.
The offshore team did all of the work - UI/UX, Android, iOS, and backend Java component. There were no onshore development resources on the team. Some parts of the application include fairly complex alarming logic as well as sophisticated user interface elements.
We worked in a small team for about 18 months, along with one of Sotera's product managers. We utilized an agile product development process and met with the project owners on a daily basis. This allowed us to respond quickly to the rapidly changing requirements and priorities. Our product manager worked with Sotera to build, maintain and prioritize the backlog based on market need. The backlog consisted of user stories with acceptance criteria. During the daily meetings, each team member reported status, and any new user stories were discussed and estimated.
Testing was performed utilizing the acceptance criteria defined as part of each user story. Failed acceptance criteria were entered as defects and prioritized alongside the user stories in the backlog. Acceptance criteria stated only “what” should be possible – the “how” was left as an exercise for the combined team to determine.
From a remote viewer, a clinician can keep an eye on all of the patients on their unit, receive alarms and view historical trend data. Sotera learned from early customers that clinicians are too busy to constantly walk back to the nurse station to check the status of their patients. What was missing from the product was the ability to directly notify clinicians regarding the status of their patients.
The work was excellent. The resulting software is very stable and free from defects. They integrated seamlessly into our product development process, were very flexible and responsive and were genuinely interested in the success of the product. I would very highly recommend them and if the opportunity presents itself in the future, I would utilize them again without hesitation. Sotera could not have chosen a better partner.
